D’Eriq King is a player to watch next season because the Hurricanes need him to be good next season. Last year’s starting quarterback Jarren Williams has transferred and seeks his fortunes elsewhere. N’Kosi Perry is not a championship-caliber starting quarterback.

High school scouts and evaluators are questioning if they overrated Tate Martell coming out of high school. One evaluator, who shall remain nameless, admitted he did just that. Simply put, King is their only viable option at quarterback.

King is being asked to come in and help change the culture in Coral Gables. He’s a graduate transfer taking the helm of a fairly young team. They are asking him to steady the ship this year in  Miami while prospect Tyler Van Dyke gets some seasoning or another quarterback emerges in 2021. Either way, Miami is asking King to do more than just be a quarterback.

For King, he wants to prove he can play and have success against Power Five-level competition and improve his NFL draft stock in 2021.

If King can lead this group of young skill position players and be a catalyst for a culture change in Miami while putting up great numbers, both sides will get what they want.
