Sports have still been taken away from us and to make up for it, I will be rewatching the 2009 college football season. Here are thoughts from Week 1.

Regular life is still far from outside of our reach, with COVID-19 taking away our day-to-day activities and viewership of sports. To make up for the loss, I have decided I will be rewatching the 2009 college football season to fill the time. Explained here, the 2009 season is bound to be an exciting one full of upsets, great matchups, and truly the beginning of a new era in college football.

To get a broad understanding of where teams were ranked at the time here is the preseason top 25 for the season. Five SEC teams clog up the top 15, including top-ranked Florida. Bitter rivals Texas and Oklahoma follow closely behind at No. 2 and No. 3.

Starting in Week 1, four top-15 matchups took place to start the season. Alabama vs. Virginia Tech and Oklahoma vs. BYU took place at neutral sites, while Georgia traveled to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State and Boise State played host to Oregon.

An opening weekend slate a college football fan can dream of, all six games I watched were entertaining from beginning to end.

Here is the full slate of games big games from Week 1:

  • No. 15 LSU vs. Washington
  • No. 14 Boise State vs. No. 16 Oregon
  • No. 5 Alabama vs. No. 7 Virginia Tech
  • No. 3 Oklahoma vs. No. 20 BYU
  • No. 9 Oklahoma State vs. No. 15 Georgia
  • No. 2 Texas vs. ULM

Breaking down each game, here are my thoughts and takeaways from Week 1 of the 2009 season.
