While everyone was expecting the 49ers to go wide receiver, they went defense and picked South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.

As we waited for the pick, the announcers talked about how much the 49ers needed a wideout and would likely go with CeeDee Lamb or Jerry Jeudy. However, they shocked a lot of people and went defense with South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, fulfilling another need they have along the defensive line.

This also made Kinlaw’s dreams come true as he stated earlier that he wanted to be a 49er all along. He will join former teammate Deebo Samuel out in San Fransisco.

He does have a lack of consistency, which is what brought him down to No. 14 — not that being a top 15 pick is all that shabby. However, he is strong, forceful and explosive which is exactly what the 49ers need on the defensive side of the ball.

With six sacks on the year in 2019 as well as 35 total tackles, Kinlaw was a staple for the Gamecocks.

Could he become an offensive lineman’s worst nightmare? Sure, but I am not sure he will be out of the gate. He’s strong against the run and can be a versatile player, but again lacks consistency.

Grade: B-

The ceiling is high for sure, but there is quite a bit of growth still to be made. I’m not sure this was the best pick they could have made, but it surely is one that closes up a hole that the team had on the defensive side of the ball and Kinlaw has room to grow.
