The Los Angeles Rams lost Todd Gurley this offseason and they replaced him with one of the best running backs in the draft in Cam Akers.

Jared Goff brought the Rams to another level a couple of years ago and he had the help of Todd Gurley to get that offense on track to become a Super Bowl contender, but there’s now a void in the backfield.

Gurley left the franchise this offseason to head back east and play for the Atlanta Falcons, close to where he played college football at Georgia. That void in the backfield was deafening.

Fortunately, the Rams filled that void with a talented running back Cam Akers from Florida State in the second round on Friday night.

Some might look at this pick as a head-scratcher because Akers’ numbers don’t exactly jump off the sheet at you, but he had two 1,000-yard seasons behind one of the worst offensive lines in college football and averaged 4.9 yards per carry for his career. He was as productive as could be behind such a horrid line.

Now that he’s in a good situation with the Rams, Akers should flourish and he is the best possible value in terms of talent and need that Los Angeles could have gotten at No. 52 overall in round two.

Grade: A-

If you’re a Rams fan, you can’t be more pleased with a pick given the circumstances and the fact that he replaces Todd Gurley perfectly. Akers was playing behind a horrid offensive line at Florida State and that should no longer be the case in Los Angeles. He should excel here.
