5. Will USC be a contender?

Let’s define contend in two different ways for the boys from the left coast. First, will they contend for a Pac-12 title? This season they should. Utah lost a ton on both sides of the ball from last season’s team, and there is not another legitimate contender in the Pac-12 South.

Quarterback Kedon Slovis came out of nowhere to have a monster season as a freshman throwing for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdown passes. Although they lose wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to the NFL, the Trojans are still loaded at wide receiver.

They return Amon-Ra St. Brown and Tyler Vaughns. Also, Stephen Carr and Marques Stepp return from injury which should help a running game that averaged under 120 yards rushing per game.

Defensively, everyone comes back. Their most important addition is defensive coordinator Todd Orlando from Texas who should give them an identity on offense. Clay Helton has two strong coordinators on both sides of the ball.

In the south division, Arizona State looks to be their biggest hurdle. If the Sun Devils are going to take the next step, quarterback Jayden Daniels has to take the next step. They lose wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and running back Eno Benjamin, but are still very talented offensively.

In the Pac-12 North, it seems like everyone is playing for second behind Oregon. The Ducks are replacing Justin Herbert, their entire offensive line, and tight end Jacob Breeland.

If the Trojans can stay healthy this season and grow offensively in year two of the air-raid, they have a shot to play for a Pac-12 title. Will they make the playoff? They will probably need both anarchy and chaos for that.
