2. Which teams will make a leap?

Let’s be clear here; you will most likely see representation in the playoff from the usual suspects. The most likely scenario is some combination of Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Georgia with Oregon and Notre Dame knocking on the door.

There are some teams, however, who are close to turning their programs into consistent winners. Can the Oregon State Beavers take the next step and find six wins this season? Nebraska transfer Tristan Gebbia takes over at quarterback and Jermar Jefferson is back at running back for 2020.

We don’t know what they are going to look like on defense, but their offense should continue to take steps forward.

Speaking of the Pac-12, is UCLA head coach Chip Kelly on the hot seat? The positive from last year’s 4-8 season was all four of their wins came in Pac-12 play. If they can duplicate that this season they have two winnable non-conference games against New Mexico State and Hawai’i.

Purdue adds a lot because they get so many players back from injury. The Boilermakers get Rondale Moore and Jack Plummer back on offense. David Bell had an outstanding season at receiver and they took the best offensive player in Michigan — Maliq Carr — right from under the nose of Jim Harbaugh.

They have issues on defense, but they could win a shoot out or two. If their offensive line can hold, up, they have a shot at six wins.
