While the ACC was the leader in conference realignment in the 2000s, the league took a major hit in 2014 when Maryland, a founding member of the ACC left for the Big Ten.
The series dates back to the 1919 season and was played 56 years in a row from 1957-2013, Maryland’s last year in the conference. The two large state schools are separated by 130 miles and remain long-time rivals in the mid-Atlantic area where the two universities continue to compete outside of athletics.
The Maryland-Virginia rivalry remains the most played opponent in the Terrapins’ football history and the fourth most commonly played opponent for the Cavaliers behind North Carolina, Virginia Tech and the Virginia Military Institute. The series saw two major swings between the programs with Maryland winning 16 straight from 1972-1987 while Virginia put together a nine-game streak from 1992-2000.
Maryland won the final two installments of the mid-Atlantic’s annual series in 2012 and 2013 before making the move to the Big Ten.
While both programs continue to fight along their border and along the Washington, D.C. area, the two programs have remained quiet. Despite the DMV area remaining one of the strongest recruiting hotbeds, the Terps have struggled to move out of the basement in a loaded Big Ten East, while Virginia has finally moved up in the ACC Coastal.
The two are set to resume their series in a home and home series from 2023-24. The series is set to kickoff in College Park, Md., and close in Charlottesville, Va.
There is no plan to reopen the rivalry between the upcoming home and home. With the two programs continuing to squeeze in a spot for other opponents of the Big Ten and ACC, the two could continue to face off again on an annual basis.
