Ohio State Football: Jeff Okudah will be Pro Bowler for Detroit Lions
By Dante Pryor
Jeffrey Okudah was taken No. 3 overall by the Detroit Lions. Here is why the Ohio State football star will be a Pro Bowler for the Lions.
The term shut down corner was coined during the heyday of the great Deion Sanders. The term is used too loosely quite frankly. There would be entire games where teams would not throw to Sanders’ side of the field. That is a rarity in today’s game.
Jeffery Okudah is the closest cornerback we’ve had to Deion Sanders in a long time. High praise for the young man from Ohio State, but it is well deserved. Sanders is the progenitor of the modern-day cornerback.
Okudah, more than any other defensive back has those traits. He can run with any wide receiver in the league. Most importantly, he understands how to press without getting pass interference penalties.
Rarely do you see a plug and play starter at cornerback like Okudah. Opposing quarterbacks will learn very soon that the former Buckeye rarely falls for double moves or out and ups.
Okudah’s coaches and teammates will love the fact that he works as hard as anyone. It’s obvious he goes into every game prepared. He works to the level of his amazing talent.
The Lions need Okudah’s talents to help their 26th-ranked defense. He’ll be paired with a defense that has pieces. They should have a decent pass rush with Trey Flowers and Devon Kennard. It seems like their issue was always on the back end of their defense.
With Okudah on the back end of the defense, the Lions should see more coverage sacks, something they haven’t seen in a long time.
