Pac-12 Football: Each team’s most important newcomer for 2020
By Dante Pryor
Washington native D.J. Rogers is a modern-day tight end. He is not the typical in-line tight end of old. He can be flexed out wide or in the slot. Today’s tight-end has to be more of a receiver than a blocker and Rogers fits that mold.
Rogers adds an explosive playmaker absent from the California offense. He gives quarterback Chase Garbers a big reliable target as he can patrol the seams of the defense or release on quick-hitting routes.
Rogers can instantly be the big reliable target that Garbers has sorely lacked. We know that the Golden Bears want to run the football. Having a target as versatile at Rogers gives the Golden Bears offense an element that will keep safeties honest.
When you put on the tape, Rogers’ fluidity as a route runner instantly sticks out. He just knows how to get open. Not only that, but the Eastside Catholic alum is also a “handsy” receiver. He attacks the ball and he does not wait for the ball to come into his body.
He is not that great an in-line blocker, but he is willing. He also blocks well in space, however. His skill is going to get him on the field.
