College Football Rankings: Post-spring Top 25 projections for 2020
With Georgia losing neatly their entire offense, Florida may be the favorites in the SEC East. Kyle Trask did a phenomenal job at quarterback and will have an experienced offensive line to protect him. Defensively, Florida was among the stingiest teams in the nation and it’ll return much of the front-seven from a year ago. If the Gators want to steal the East from the Dawgs, 2020 is the year to do it.
LSU lost a whopping 14 players from their 2019 National Championship roster, including Heisman winner Joe Burrow, star linebacker Patrick Queen and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The team returns the nation’s top wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and other star players in JaCoby Stevens and Terrace Marshall Jr.
Quarterback Myles Brennan has to prove he can play at the SEC level, but the roster is still one that can win the SEC West and get back to the postseason.
Ohio State won’t have Chase Young or J.K. Dobbins back in 2020, but Justin Fields back under center and that alone makes them a title contender. Perhaps the Heisman front-runner, Fields will lead another loaded Buckeye offense. Defensively, Ohio State lost both Jeffrey Okudah and Damon Arnette, thus their 2019 nation-best pass defense may take a step back, but the front seven should be sound.
The Buckeyes are heavy Big Ten favorites and will look to avenge their semifinals loss to Clemson if they get back to the playoff.
For the first time in the College Football Playoff era (2014-present), the Alabama Crimson Tide were left on the outside looking in last year after an 11-2 season. This figures to be a one-time deal as Mac Jones showed great promise at quarterback and will have Najee Harris, Jaylen Waddle, Devonta Smith and much of his offensive line from a year ago back. On defense, Alabama returns Dylan Moses, Patrick Surtain II and Josh Jobe returning. Nick Saban will get his team back to the postseason.
Clemson will have one of their more experienced offenses rosters of their five-year run of greatness with Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne and Justyn Ross all set to return. While the defense is young, the talent is through the roof and in the ACC the Tigers roster is simply far superior to anyone in the conference. Dabo Swinney is going to want to send his next group of future NFL stars off on top and should have a great chance to do so.
