SEC Football: Every team’s best newcomer for 2020 season
By Dante Pryor
Derek Mason and the Vanderbilt Commodores need a break. Even with an upset of Missouri last season, they did not notch another victory over a Power Five school the rest of the season.
This is year seven for Mason and he has not come close to duplicating the success of his predecessor James Franklin.
Where the Commodores have struggled most under Mason is the offense. They had a brief stint of success when Kyle Shumur was quarterback but little offensive success otherwise. Ironically, that is exactly where Vanderbilt needs to “Anchor Down.”
Vanderbilt is not completely sold on their returning quarterback room. They went out and brought in four quarterbacks this cycle. If the quarterback play does not improve, the Commodores are looking at another 3-9 season or worse.
Of the four quarterbacks they brought in, Danny Clark has the best chance to start day one. He is one of two JUCO quarterbacks Vandy brought in this cycle. Clark has the best arm and the size to come in and stabilize the position.
Derek Mason is in a tight spot this season. He needs wins and they are hard to come by when you are at the bottom of the SEC. Danny Clark can come in and stabilize the position and hopefully get them more than three wins.
