Quarterback

Starting quarterback: Ian Book
Backup: Brendon Clark

Despite third-year starter Ian Book returning for his fifth year with the team, the Irish still have some big shoes to fill in the quarterbacks room. For starters, the Irish will be without the services of quarterback Nolan Henry for he first time in five years. While Henry didn’t make much noise on the field, his work as a teammate has been well documented throughout his time at Notre Dame.

Perhaps more importantly, junior Phil Jurkovec’s transfer to Boston College leaves the Irish with a less stable backup plan in the form of sophomore Brendon Clark. As a sophomore with limited experience under his belt, it would be unfair to make any assumptions about his future at this point in his career. However, there’s little doubt that Jurkovec was a much safer bet at No. 2.

The most pressing question, however, is whether Book has what it takes to push the Irish over the hump.

It’s no secret that the Irish have a less than desirable record against the nation’s elite, and while not all of that is on Book, his play has been mostly on par with his team. The coaching staff clearly still believes in him, but only time will tell whether or not he will be the guy to take the Irish back to the promised land.
