College Football Rewind: 5 most important games from 2007 season
5. (2) Boston College 14, (8) Virginia Tech 10
The first game on this list also had one of the most dramatic finishes of the season and gave Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan his nickname that still sticks today: Matty Ice.
Virginia Tech’s defense was among the best in the country this season and had held Ryan and the Eagles’ offense to zero points until he hit Rich Gunnell for a touchdown with 2:11 to go.
With only one timeout left, the Eagles had to try and onside kick to get another possession and the attempt was successful. With just 11 seconds left, Ryan rolled to his left and threw back across the field to find a wide open Andre Callender to seal the victory for Boston College.
Boston College moved to 8-0 with a victory and appeared to be heading toward a possible national championship berth. The Eagles would later lose to Florida State and Maryland to dash those dreams, but this game is more significant because of how it impacted Virginia Tech.
Despite a blowout loss earlier in the season to LSU, Virginia Tech had repositioned themselves in the championship race and this would be their last loss in the regular season.
Because of the chaos on the last week of the season, it’s fair to assume the Hokies would have played Ohio State for the national championship and possibly won it, giving Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer that long awaited national title. Another missed opportunity for the Hokies.
