3. Jafar Armstrong, RB, Notre Dame football

At the beginning of last season, Jafar Armstrong was going to be part of a potent 1-2 punch with Tony Jones Jr. Unfortunately for Armstrong, he battled injuries most of last season.

This season he is back and he is healthy. As a sophomore, Armstrong was a change of pace back alongside Dexter Williams gaining 383 yards and scoring 7 touchdowns. He also chipped in 14 receptions that season.

Jafar comes into this season healed and healthy. What he needs to prove this season is whether or not he can lead this young running back group in 2020. Though the Irish added Trevor Speights from Stanford via the transfer portal, it seems like a move for more experience.

Armstrong is the veteran in the running back room that has been part of the program. He’s the all-purpose back — he converted from wide receiver — that can offer in the passing game.

It is a crowded running back room full of talented young players. However, they are unproven and inexperienced. What the Irish need this season is for one of them to step up their game and take the job.

This is where Armstrong comes in. He needs to show every other running back on the roster that he’s the best in the room and he should not just be given the starting job by default.
