It took some time, but wide receiver JD Spielman is transferring from Nebraska football and he hopes to play for a new team in 2020.

Multiple teams have already started their progress for the 2020 season this past Monday. For most players, they have been training for the season while in quarantine to potentially help their team win a conference or national championship. For Nebraska wide receiver JD Spielman, he’s looking to make the change that will better himself at another university.

On Monday, Spielman entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal.

In late March, Spielman took a leave of absence from the program to take care of personal issues. Those issues gave him an epiphany to continue his collegiate with another program after spending four years with the Cornhuskers.

Spielman chose the Cornhuskers over multiple teams as a three-star athlete as well as 2015 Mr. Football for the state of Minnesota. In the overall three seasons at Nebraska as a starter, Spielman has caught 170 passes for 2,546 yards, and 15 touchdowns. He has also returned 36 kickoff returns for 835 yards and a touchdown.

In the previous season as a junior, Spielman caught 49 passes for 898 yards and five touchdowns. He was named as an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection. As a sophomore in 2018, Spielman caught 66 passes for 818 yards and eight touchdowns as well as returned six punts for 104 yards and a touchdown. He was named as a third-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches and the media.

As a slot receiver and a return specialist, Spielman is one of the dangerous playmakers as he can easily beat his defenders with his speed, elusiveness and dynamic athleticism. He has been a key versatile player for the Cornhuskers’ offense that has been lackluster due to inefficient quarterback play.

In his time as a player for the past three seasons, Spielman has been a part of a team that accounted for a 13-23 record. Scott Frost is entering his third season as head coach of the Cornhuskers as he has accounted for a 9-15 record.

The decision for Spielman and the Cornhuskers and Frost to move on was considered mutual.

If Spielman can get immediate eligibility for the 2020 season by the NCAA, he will be able to use his elusive and speedy playmaking abilities for a team that has the potential to account for a big season.

Here are three potential destinations for Spielman.
