5 first-year college football coaches who will struggle in 2020
5. Greg Schiano, Rutgers
I don’t feel amazing putting Greg Schiano on this list. In fact, I think this is the best hire college football has seen in a while. He basically brought Rutgers from irrelevant to being a Big Ten team. Then he left, and Rutgers has been a floor mat in the Big Ten since 2012.
With his return, I’m confident he’ll at least bring Rutgers to being a solid team in one of college football’s best conferences.
The only problem that stands in front of him is that Rutgers stinks. There are multiple FCS teams that would probably be favored in a matchup against them if it happened tomorrow. Between the Scarlet Knights and Kansas, there hasn’t been a worse stretch for a Power Five football team in recent memory.
Schiano has a tall task in front of him and he’ll definitely struggle in year one, especially considering the current circumstances. But don’t write off Rutgers just yet, as Schiano will be one of the better coaches in the Big Ten.
