Iowa State football’s elite tight end

The 2020 NFL Draft featured some tight ends that were good but not elite prospects in their position. This season is looking to be different with some great and dangerous tight ends in Charlie Kolar.

In the two seasons at Iowa, Kolar has 62 receptions for 834 yards and 10 touchdowns while only dropping two passes. This past season, Kolar has 51 receptions for 697 yards and seven touchdowns. He was selected as a first-team All-Big 12 member this past season.

Kolar was named a second-team preseason All-American by Athlon Sports as well as a first-team Big 12 selection. He is one of the most reliable catchers and route runners for the Cyclones as well as all the tight ends in the nation. While he doesn’t have speed, he can run dynamic routes, reach and has a great window to catch the ball.

The junior tight end measures in at 6-6, 252 pounds, which gives him the great size and ability to contend for the ball against opposing defenses. He is a matchup nightmare while in tight coverages against defenses, but he can separate himself with his route running ability.

With the Cyclones looking to compete heavily in the Big 12, there will be plenty of opportunities for Kolar to expand his status as an NFL draft to the first-round potential. Look for Kolar to be considered as one of the top tight end prospects with Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth and Florida’s Kyle Pitts.
