10 college football coaches who could be out of a job after the 2020 season
Randy Edsall, UConn Huskies
Record: 6-30 in 3 seasons
When the Connecticut Huskies needed a revival with their football program, they called their former head coach in Randy Edsall to lead them again.
After coaching the Huskies to a 70-63 record in 11 seasons from 2000-10 and five bowl appearances, Edsall took the head coaching position for the Maryland Terrapins in 2011. He coached the Terrapins for five seasons and accumulated a 22-34 record until he was fired after the 2015 season.
The program knew it lost some recognition to its football team, but they expected Edsall to rebuild it slowly when he was hired as a head coach again in 2017. Instead, he has coached the Huskies to three highly underwhelming seasons. From 2017-19, the Huskies have gone 6-30 including last year’s embarrassing record of 2-10. The Huskies did not win an American Athletic game either in 2018 nor 2019.
Edsall finds himself again in the hot seat as a head coach, this time with the Huskies. The Huskies are projected to finish 3-9 against a grueling schedule that includes at Illinois, at Virginia, Indiana, at Ole Miss and at North Carolina. They will be playing as an independent team without a conference, which will not help them in the long run.
Off the field, the Huskies finished with the 118th ranked recruiting class in 2020. They return seven offensive players on an offense that was ranked 120th in the points per game (18.9). They also return 10 defensive players on a defense that was ranked 128th in points allowed per game (40.5). There’s more than enough room for improvement for the Huskies this season.
