LSU football is recruiting at an extremely high level under Ed Orgeron, and they’re doing it by finding success outside the state of Louisiana.

A temporary extension of the recruiting dead period has lengthened again and again. Despite the restrictions, the 2021 LSU Football recruiting class hasn’t missed a beat. The Tigers have the No. 9 class in the nation and the No. 3 class in the SEC despite no program being able to meet with recruits in person since early March.

LSU’s most recent addition, four-star offensive tackle Garrett Dellinger, came from out of state. Dellinger’s addition reinforced a national recruiting philosophy that has already secured the Tigers with a host of premier players in this class alone. Ten of LSU’s 12 current commits are four-star players, only one of those recruits is from Louisiana. Of the non-4-star recruits, one of them is punter Peyton Todd from West Monroe, La.

With several months remaining to fill out this class, the Tigers have earned commitments from players from California, Texas, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Georgia and Florida.

Recruiting on a national scale isn’t a must, but it’s hard to find many top tier programs that limit their scope. Tennessee and Alabama’s top ranked players are from Florida. Clemson’s top player is from North Carolina. Ohio State has commitments from three five-star prospects from outside the state of Ohio. Going national is the norm and LSU is succeeding on that front.

From there, the Tigers plan on closing down their own state borders.  The top four players in the state of Louisiana, including five-star defensive tackle Maason Smith, are projected to commit to LSU. All are rated inside the top 70 players nationally.

That’s all icing on the cake of a loaded roster. LSU is coming off back-to-back top five classes. Much has been made of the quantity of talent lost from last year’s team. People need to start paying attention to the slew of game-changers on their way to Baton Rouge.
