If we’re talking about the Heisman Trophy, it seems nowadays whoever the quarterback for Oklahoma is in the hunt. This year will bring an interesting test to that theory. The Sooners will bring in Spencer Rattler, a redshirt freshman from Arizona, who carries a lot of hype.

Rattler was the consensus No. 1 quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class. He threw for an Arizona state record of 11,083 passing yards in his high school career. He comes in a tad undersized for the quarterback position at 6-foot-0, 191 pounds but being undersized has not stopped an Oklahoma gunslinger from winning a Heisman before.

The biggest factor to consider beyond Rattler’s talent is the Lincoln Riley factor. He has been the head coach at Oklahoma for just three seasons and in those three years, Riley has been on an unprecedented run in terms of team success and building up individual success. He has been in the College Football Playoff every year as a head coach.

Riley has also helped Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray win the Heisman trophies in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Jalen Hurts finished second in last year’s voting despite having an up-and-down career at Alabama. Riley seems to be the ultimate quarterback whisperer in the Big 12.

If Rattler can put up a similar type season as those guys, he will definitely be in the mix.
