Position battles come in all shapes and sizes for Notre Dame football. Here are the most intriguing ones for an Irish team primed for a postseason push.

With mandatory workouts just over two weeks away, programs across the country prepare for the beginning stages of the lead-up to the 2020 college football season. The ultimate goal of these workouts and the training camps they proceed are to prepare players for the upcoming season, often providing an indication in regard to who will start by the time Week 1 rolls around.

While the coaching staff typically enters the summer months with an idea as to who they want to see on the field in the coming fall, the Irish and teams across the country find themselves in unprecedented territory after having spring practices cut short due to the events of COVID-19.

The loss of valuable spring practices will likely hamstring teams’ younger athletes, especially early enrollees who would otherwise be accruing an extra semester of work with the team.

Regardless, it will be up to the Irish coaching staff to identify those players prepared to start in Week 1. It will take a few position battles to decide who those players will be, so here’s a look at some of the more exciting ones worth monitoring.
