New Mexico Football: Danny Gonzales is right man for job in 2020
3. Lobos looking to find answers on offense
New Mexico’s offense will be under the direction of first time offensive coordinator Derek Warehime, who has coached at New Mexico previously as the tight ends coach and run game coordinator before leaving for Texas to coach the offensive line and tight ends, and even took the job as special teams coordinator.
The cupboard is pretty bare in Albuquerque, as they have not been able to settle on a quarterback yet. The three candidates to be the starter are Tevaka Tuioti, who was the starter for the majority of the season last year, Brandt Hughes and Trae Hall. They all have certain skill sets, but it would be better for the program if they could identify one starter and stick with him all season.
Running back Bryson Carroll will takeover as the main ball carrier for the Lobos after posting 536 yards and two touchdowns last season.
The Lobos have experience at the wide receiver position, as Jordan Kress and Anselem Umeh are both talented and Elijah Lilly is the best deep threat and big play threat on the team. Tight end Marcus Williams is a senior this year and has plenty of experience. They will have to replace three starters on the offensive line, but four out of the five starters will be seniors, so experience is not the issue.
What Warehime will be looking to improve in his first season as the offensive coordinator will be the efficiency on offense. New Mexico was one of the least efficient teams in the entire country last season and for any sustained offensive success, that will need to change dramatically.
The key for the Lobos’ offense will be finding the right quarterback and becoming more efficient in the passing game. Do these things, and the Lobos offense should be slightly improved in 2020.
