South Alabama looking to be more consistent on offense

The Jaguars’ offensive inconsistencies were the biggest downfall this past season. Last season, their offense was ranked 121st in the nation in points per game (18.4) and 113th in total yards accounted for per game (330.3). While the Jaguars had a solid running game, they experienced many problems driving the ball down the field with their RPO-style system.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Desmond Trotter returns after starting the final four games of the season for the Jaguars. He was a more efficient and progressive passing dual-threat quarterback than Cephus Johnson. He will compete against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College transfer in Chance Lovertich for starting quarterback.

The Jaguars will miss their biggest offensive playmaker from the past two seasons in running back Tra Minter. He was not only a contributor as a running back, but he provided an impact in the receiving and return games as well. The Jaguars will likely turn to sophomore Carlos Davis as their running back. Last season, he rushed for 269 yards and two touchdowns on 61 carries.

One of the biggest strengths of the offense will be their deep and talented receivers corps. The Jaguars return two starters and two dynamic, solid playmakers from last season. The receivers, led by senior Kawaan Baker and junior Jalen Tolbert, will look to make the passing game more efficient than last season as they were ranked 119th in passing yards per game (158.8).

The Jaguars return four of their offensive linemen that opened 2019 as starters. Junior left tackle Hayden Burton was a player that became a starter halfway through the season. This is an offensive line that created a significant amount of push in certain packages. They did allow 28 sacks from this past season on their dual-threat and mobile quarterbacks. This is one area the offensive line will have to improve on the most if they want a more efficient passing offense.
