How will ULM football fare in 2020

These predictions for the Warhawks season are being made under the assumption that there are no injuries during the season or anything COVID-19 related happens.

  • Game 1: vs. Cal Poly (W) — ULM needs to win this game  against this FCS opponent to have any hopes of a bowl.
  • Game 2: vs. Texas State (W) — Texas State has been one of the worst teams in the Sun Belt and that probably won’t change in 2020.
  • Game 3: at Georgia (L) — The Bulldogs are going to be too much for ULM. This will probably get very ugly.
  • Game 4: vs. Georgia Southern (L) — The Eagles are one of the top teams in the Sun Belt and will be a great running team. This is just a bad matchup for the Warhawks’ defense.
  • Game 5: at Liberty (L) — Liberty was a solid team in 2019, winning a bowl game under Hugh Freeze and will be better in 2020. Liberty will be a tough out for any team in 2020.
  • Game 6: at Troy (L) — Troy has long been one of the top teams in the Sun Belt, but is looking to rebound after a tough 2019. Troy wins a tough one at home.
  • Game 7: at South Alabama (W) — South Alabama is another bottom half team in the Sun Belt and this will be a crucial game for the Warhawks. Offense comes up big on the road.
  • Game 8: vs. Appalachian State (L) — App State is the premier program in the Sun Belt and will be looking to make a New Year’s Six game in 2020. This game could get ugly.
  • Game 9: at Georgia State (W) — Georgia State will also be looking for a new quarterback in 2020 and hoping for a fourth bowl game in six seasons. I’m going out on a limb here with this game being on the road but I think the Warhawks will pull an upset somewhere this season.
  • Game 10: at Arkansas State (L) — Arkansas State will have a very good offense in 2020 and that does not bode well for ULM.
  • Game 11: at Arkansas (L) — ULM pulled a massive upset in 2012 when they beat Arkansas. Arkansas will struggle under new coach Sam Pittman this season, but this will be an easy one for the Razorbacks.
  • Game 12: Louisiana (L) — Louisiana will have another fantastic offense and will be looking to make another Sun Belt title game appearance.

Prediction: 4-8 (3-5 Sun Belt)

With so many questions at quarterback, offensive line and the run defense, it’s tough to see ULM getting to 6-7 wins.

The schedule is brutal as well, with non-conference games against Georgia and Arkansas, and they face the top teams in the Sun Belt in App State, Arkansas State and Georgia Southern. If the defense is better than expected, ULM could still some games.
