2. Hank Bachmeier, QB, Boise State

Of course Boise State’s quarterback is going to be brought up in the conversation for top Group of Five players.

As just a freshman, Hank Bachmeier showed some flashes of greatness last season when a nagging hip injury wasn’t costing him playing time.

Bachmeier’s numbers were good, throwing for about 235 yards per game with nine touchdowns, but had six interceptions. Two of those picks came against Washington in a game where he wasn’t totally healthy.

The biggest thing Bachmeier had going for him was was his winning abilities. Bachmeier was 7-1 in games he started including wins at Florida State and home against Air Force.

In the game against Florida State, he showed why he was a four-star recruit with offers from the likes of Georgia and Tennessee. He led a come-from-behind win in a game where Boise was down 31-13 — the Broncos won 36-31. Bachmeier’s 407 yards put the rest of the country on notice that he would be the real deal.

Going into his sophomore season and coming off an injury-riddled 2019, a Heisman in 2020 may not happen, but he could put himself in line for a solid campaign in 2021.

If Bachmeier can stay healthy, he has potential to put himself on a list with Kellen Moore. If not, a Heisman-contending teammate will have to take the load.
