Offense can get the job done

The Chanticleers’ offense is not going to win any beauty contests. Despite its lack of aesthetic quality, they can score points. They averaged 30 points per game last season. Coastal was held to two touchdowns or fewer only twice last season — they won one of those games.

Their power-spread option is effective. Last season, the Chanticleers eclipsed 30 points four times including 62 against UMass and 42 against Louisiana-Monroe in a losing effort. The offense was effective last season.

Three of their seven losses were by one-possession including a one-point loss to Arkansas State. If the ball bounces differently, they are 8-4 instead of 5-7.

The offense should not miss a beat next season. They return four of their five offensive linemen and should be one of the better offensive lines in the conference. They likely will platoon quarterbacks Fred Payton and Bryce Carpenter. Payton is the better downfield passer and Carpenter was second on the team in rushing.

Also returning is last season’s leading rusher Torrance Marable. Their diminutive dynamo — 5-foot-10, 190 pounds — led the team with over 1,000 yards and was second on the team in receptions. Coastal returns two of their three leading receivers from last season in Jaivon Heiligh and Ky’Jon Tyler. They also all utility player Fred Jackson from the JUCO ranks.

This should be another solid offensive season for the Chanticleers.
