How will Coastal Carolina football fare in 2020?

This shortened season is all about continuity and identity. The Chanticleers have both. They return most of their best players from last season. They’ll benefit from ranking 19th in the country in returning production.

  • Game 1: at South Carolina (L) — This would be a momentous upset. App State did it last season, but the Chanticleers are nowhere as good as the Mountaineers.
  • Game 2: at Eastern Michigan (W) — They lost to the Eagles last season, but Eastern has to replace two of their best offensive players and most of their offensive line. Their defense isn’t very good either.
  • Game 3: vs. Duquesne (W) — They take care of business against a lower-tiered opponent.
  • Game 4: vs. Kansas (L) — This is a 50/50 game, but it’s on the road and the Jayhawks will be better year two of Les Miles.
  • Game 5: vs. Arkansas State (W) — Another 50/50 game, but the Wolves lose two of their three leading receivers from last season and their defense struggled to stop the Chanticleer run game.
  • Game 6: at Louisiana (L) — This season will be a closer game, but the Bulldogs are the better team.
  • Game 7: vs. Georgia Southern (W) — This could be one of the better games in the Group of Five early this season. It’s hard to bet against Shai Werts and the Eagles, but the Chanticleers are on the winning side of another close game.
  • Game 8: at Georgia State (W) —  The Panthers have to replace their two best offensive players this season and their defense is bad.
  • Game 9: vs. South Alabama (W) — The Jaguars are the worst team in the Sun Belt.
  • Game 10: at Troy (L) — This is a 50/50 game. Troy lost a close game last season and get their revenge at home this season.
  • Game 11: vs. App State (L) — The Mountaineers are one of the better teams in the Group of 5. The Chanticleers are not ready.
  • Game 12: at Texas State (W) — the Bobcats are still rebuilding.

Prediction 7-5 (5-3 Sun Belt)

Though there are no major upsets, the Chanticleers win some of the 50/50 games that they lost last season. Their returning production is the reason they flip their record from last season and get a postseason birth.
