College Football: 6 teams that could go winless in 2020
The deepest and darkest depths of the college football record book aren’t as lonely as you’d expect. Which teams could go winless in 2020?
Winning at the FBS level is hard. Sure, the likes of Clemson, Alabama and Ohio State make it look easy, but Division 1 is the highest level of non-professional football anywhere.
Since 2000, only 21 teams have failed to win a game over the course of a season. Of the five winless Power Five seasons, Duke accounts for three (including back-to-back 0-11 seasons) with the others being Washington in 2008 and Kansas in 2015.
The 2019 season featured an 0-12 Akron team. The 2003 Army Black Knights are the only team in major college football history to lose more than 12 games in a single season, as a trip to Hawaii gave them an extra game to lose, finishing their season at 0-13.
While the 2020 season is sure to be different, it’s going to have its share of bad football as well. With 130 teams, it’s impossible to think that all of them will be at least “decent”.
Luckily, games against FCS opponents limit the chances of winless seasons, but with non-conference games either cancelled or in question around the country, this will be a good chance to see multiple winless teams in the basement of conferences.
If a winless season does occur, these are the teams most likely to be responsible.
