How will Georgia Southern football fare in 2020?

These predictions are obviously made with the assumption of no injuries and nothing COVID-19 related impacting the season.

  • Game 1: at Boise State (L) — Boise is a long distance to travel for the Eagles and the Broncos will be one of the best teams in the Group of Five.
  • Game 2: vs. Campbell (W) — The Eagles should get a win here against a very overmatched FCS opponent in Campbell.
  • Game 3: vs. Florida Atlantic (W) — I think this may be a mild upset, as the Owls are going to have a very good offense, but Paulson Stadium is a tough place to play and the Eagles offense grinds this game away.
  • Game 4: at Louisiana (L) — The Ragin’ Cajuns will once again be contenders in the Sun Belt and will be a tough team to beat on the road.
  • Game 5: at ULM (W) — The Warhawks’ defense is not very good and won’t be able to get enough stops vs the Eagles ground game.
  • Game 6: vs. App State (L) — The Eagles have won two in a row against the Mountaineers and will have the opportunity to do so again, but something tells me App State will be wanting revenge for Georgia Southern ruining their perfect season a year ago.
  • Game 7: at Coastal Carolina (W) — The Eagles bounce back with a key conference win on the road.
  • Game 8: vs. South Alabama (W) — South Alabama has been one of the worst teams in the conference and wont be able to move the ball on a tough Eagles defense.
  • Game 9: vs. Troy (W) — This is a toss-up game, but the Eagles home-field advantage is real and the Trojans are trying to bounce back after a disappointing 2019.
  • Game 10: vs. Texas State (W): Another home game against one of the worst teams in the conference should result in another Eagles victory.
  • Game 11: at Ole Miss (L) — The Rebels will be too talented for the Eagles in Lane Kiffin’s debut season in Oxford.
  • Game 12: at Georgia State (W) — The Panthers have uncertainty at quarterback and the defense won’t be able to stop the Eagles’ ground attack.

Final Record: 8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt

The Eagles will have tough road games against Boise State and Ole Miss that will be likely losses, and having to play Louisiana on the road won’t be easy, but the rest of the schedule sets up rather nicely for Georgia Southern. App State comes to Statesboro and that will be the defining game of the season for the Eagles. Win that and a trip to the conference title game could be in the cards. The Mountaineers will be too strong this year, but the Eagles won’t be an easy win for anyone.
