Iowa State Football: Breece Hall will climb into record books in 2020
Breece Hall had a solid freshman season with Iowa State football, rushing for just under 900 yards and the best is yet to come.
When Matt Campbell landed Breece Hall, there was some hope that he would take over in the backfield from day one and lead the Cyclones’ rushing attack as a freshman. He was a four-star recruit who drew plenty of interest on a national level.
In fact, programs like Baylor, Iowa, Kansas State, Louisville, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ole Miss, TCU and Tennessee were all interested in the Wichita, Kan., native who was ranked the No. 139 prospect in the class, according to 247Sports.
Hall was a 5-foot-10, 205-pound back with solid muscle as well as athleticism and Charles Power of 247Sports even compared him to Carlos Hyde.
Year one didn’t get off to a sparkling start for Hall, however. He had 18 carries for 82 yards through his first four games and then the coaching staff decided to give him the nod over Johnnie Lang and Kene Nwangwu. The run game went from non-existent in the first month of the season to competent with Hall leading the way.
The freshman back rushed for at least 100 yards in four of his next five games and finished the season with 897 yards and nine touchdowns on 4.8 yards per touch.
While that may not seem overly impressive, you have to realize a majority of this production came in just eight games to end the year.
Now entering his sophomore season as the clear No. 1 back, there’s a good chance Hall will be a 1,000-yard rusher, and then some, which will supplant him on the all-time Iowa State rushing leaderboard. If I were to guess, I’d say that if a season goes on as planned, he’ll break the top 10 in single-season rushing yards (at least 1,237) and if he does that, he’ll approach the top 10 in career rushing yards (No. 10 has 2,562).
If he cracks the top 10 in single-season rushing touchdowns (at least 12), he’ll jump into the top 10 in school history for his career (21).
Hall has plenty of work to do, but he has shown he can be a workhorse for the Cyclones and if that offensive line continues to improve, we will see him breaking out to become one of the Big 12’s top running backs in 2020.
We could see him on all-time Iowa State leaderboards by the end of the regular season.
