Pac-12 Football: Each team’s top Heisman Trophy candidate for 2020
By Dante Pryor
The one word that best describes Utah grad transfer Jake Bentley is potential. He was one of South Carolina’s best offensive recruits under Will Muschamp. Despite all the hype, Bentley never became one of the SEC’s elite quarterbacks.
Last season, a knee injury knocked him out for the season. His backup Ryan Hilinski played well, and Bentley found himself in the transfer portal. What better redemption story than Bentley leading the Utes to a conference title with a Heisman-like season?
If Bentley were to lead this Utes team to a conference title, it would take a herculean effort to do so. This Utes squad is rebuilding after losing eleven players to both graduation and the NFL draft. Some of the players that are gone from last year include running back Zack Moss and defensive back Jaylon Johnson.
Suffice it to say that Bentley is arguably the best player on the team this year. He would have to turn in the performance of a lifetime in order for the Utes to contend. On the balance, they are a 6-8 win team this season.
They would need the effort of all efforts in order to level up to contention. Maybe Bentley can write that redemption story.
