Pac-12 Football: Each team’s top Heisman Trophy candidate for 2020
By Dante Pryor
Much like Jayden Daniels, the question surrounding California junior quarterback Chase Garbers is whether or not head coach Justin Wilcox will loosen the reigns on the Bears offense. Wilcox, like Herm Edwards, is a defensive coach.
Not only is Wilcox’s conservative approach a roadblock, but Garbers’ health is also another issue. He had a good season last year but missed significant time with a shoulder injury. In order for Garbers to put up numbers, he needs to stay healthy.
Most importantly, Garbers has to cut down on the turnovers. He was better last season, throwing only three interceptions in nine games. However, his career touchdown-to-interception ratio is barely 2-1.
If the Bears and Garbers are to take that quantum to contention, the offense has to score more than 21 points per game this season. Wilcox can be trusted to put a good stifling defense on the field, but the offense has to score more points.
Cal offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave has to put the pedal to the metal offensively. Garbers have to throw the ball more times per game. They do not have a dynamic playmaker on offense, so they will have to rely on his ability to get the ball to multiple receivers.
If the Bears contend, it will be because Garbers took the next step as a quarterback.
