Pac-12 Football: Each team’s top Heisman Trophy candidate for 2020
By Dante Pryor
Colorado’s diminutive dynamo KD Nixon is one of two non-quarterbacks on the entire list. He makes a list over junior running back Alex Fontenot because Nixon can be used in a myriad of ways. That will be important for new head coach Karl Dorrell.
Nixon is Colorado’s most dynamic offensive playmaker. Expect the Buffaloes and new offensive coordinator Darrin Chiaverini to take full advantage of that versatility and playmaking ability. Nixon can line up at either outside receiver position or in the slot.
Expect to see Nixon on some jet sweep action and also involved in both the kick and punt return game as well. There is some question as to who is going to start at quarterback this season. Whoever it is will need to lean on Nixon.
That gives the senior wide receiver plenty of opportunities to put up numbers this season. It is not easy for wide receivers to win the award. Receivers who won the award also doubled as kick and punt returners. Expect of Nixon to get plenty of touches.
If the Buffaloes shock the world and contend, Nixon will be the catalyst for an offense breaking in a new quarterback. They’ll need him to as well.
