Anytime you think a first-time starting quarterback can’t win and contend for a Heisman Trophy, think about Tee Martin. Not only did Martin take over for one of the best quarterbacks in the history of college football in Peyton Manning, but he also won a national title.

Could Tyler Shough do the same?

Last season’s LSU squad showed the college football universe that nothing is impossible. He has every opportunity to succeed this season for the Ducks. If he can win the job, that is. Neither Shough nor Boston College transfer Anthony Brown has an inside track on the job because neither has been around new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead.

Provided Shough wins the job, there are weapons all around him. Despite having to replace four starters on the offensive line, he does have the best tackle in the country Penei Sewell to protect his blindside and one of the best running backs in the country C.J. Verdell.

Shough will have a full complement of receivers, including USC transfer Devon Williams. The receiving corps should thrive in Moorhead’s RPO-based scheme. Most importantly, Shough is going to have a lot of possessions this season playing opposite one of the best defenses in the country.

If any quarterback is set to pull a Martin, it’s Shough.
