Davis Mills is an authentic Heisman Trophy darkhorse candidate. He’s one of the most highly-touted recruits in the history of the university. Coming in as a five-star out of Georgia, he spurned every school in the SEC to go out west and play for the Cardinal.

There is some skepticism about the Cardinal and their offensive shift. If their move from a power-running, pro-style offense is to be successful, Mills will be the primary reason. He has the arm to make every throw in offensive coordinator Tavita Pritchard’s offense.

The benefit for Mills is he has 4-of-5 of his leading receivers returning this season. Running back could be a question, but the offensive line has a heavy veteran presence, including Walker Little at tackle.

The Cardinal wants to prove the transition of offensive philosophies is not a mistake. They also want to prove their 4-8 season was an anomaly and not the beginning of a trend downward for the Cardinal.

David Shaw and the Cardinal have their quarterback. He has to prove he can lead them to a big season in the Pac-12. Mills certainly has all of the tools to elevate this team and take them to the next level; that could put him on the watch list.
