The official Coaches Poll was released on Thursday afternoon and the first Top 25 comes with a few surprises. Here are a few quick thoughts.

The college football season is still up in the air as are most major sports. While we’ve seen the return of MLB, NBA and NHL, college sports are looking to be on the doubtful side of things.

Despite all of this, teams are preparing for the 2020 season as if it’s going to happen and conference’s have trimmed down schedules to account for only league-only games. It’s tough to prepare for something that you don’t know is happening for sure, but it’s business as usual for most teams even though some of the nation’s top players have opted out.

On Thursday, the official 2020 Preseason Coaches Poll has been released and that means fans are getting a good feel of who the favorites to make the playoff are.

Preseason polls mean next to nothing because there’s a good chance a chunk of the Top 25 won’t be ranked at the end of the season.

Clemson gets that top spot for the second straight year, Ohio State is No. 2, Alabama is ranked No. 3 and Georgia rounds out the top four. Reigning national champion LSU is fifth.

Some quick thoughts on the Coaches Poll:

  • Clemson and Ohio State are going to be the teams to beat as long as Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields don’t opt out.
  • The top 10 seems about right, but there are a handful of teams that could make a case to being ranked in that range. Auburn, Texas A&M, Michigan and Oklahoma State come to mind here.
  • Seeing North Carolina in the preseason top 25 is crazy, but just shows that the hype surrounding Mack Brown’s team is real.
  • Iowa State, Minnesota and Utah all seem a bit underrated.
  • Wisconsin, Texas, USC, UCF and Iowa are a tad overrated.
  • Where is Tennessee?

Overall, this gives fans a little something to look forward to as the season approaches and a lot depends on star players opting out.
