Wyoming Football: Bowl bid in 2020 would do wonders for program
Wyoming football is looking to go from Mountain West divisional contender to a consistent conference title contender in 2020.
The Wyoming Cowboys have been in the mix for the Mountain West for several seasons. Head coach Craig Bohl has turned the Cowboys into a strong and consistent program that accounts for significant wins.
They are looking to exceed their expectations and tear down a plateau that keeps them from winning their division or the conference.
In the six seasons as head coach, former North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl has accumulated a 36-40 record (23-25 Mountain West) with Wyoming. The Cowboys didn’t start strong with Bohl but in the previous four seasons, they have a 30-22 overall record and 19-13 record in conference play.
In three of the past four seasons, the Cowboys have had at least eight wins and appeared in a bowl game. Outside of Bohl’s three eight seasons, the Cowboys have only one eight-win season since 1998.
This past season, the Cowboys have accounted for an 8-5 record overall (4-4 in conference play). They started last season with a huge 37-31 win at home against Missouri. Throughout the season, they suffered disappointing losses at Tulsa, a 20-17 overtime loss at Boise State and at Air Force.
To ensure that the Cowboys have a chance to get to compete for the Mountain division title, they will need to avoid upsets, especially on the road. All five of the Cowboys’ losses last season were on the road.
There’s a lot of talent and potential on both sides of the ball for the Cowboys going into the 2020 season. It will be up to the coaches to help establish and utilize these players this season especially after a cancelled spring session due to COVID-19.
The Cowboys are projected to finish with another eight-win season and finish in second place in the Mountain division by Athlon Sports.
