1. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Sept. 26. Baton Rouge (La.). Mississippi State Bulldogs. 893

In the Tigers’ first game of the season, they will welcome Mississippi State and new head coach Mike Leach to Death Valley. The Bulldogs had underachieved the past couple of seasons and wasted some elite defensive talent by being an inconsistent offense and for that, former head coach Joe Moorhead was let go.

Leach is one of the smartest offensive minds in the country and Mississippi State is hoping he can return them to the winning ways they found under former coach Dan Mullen.

The Bulldogs are turning to Stanford transfer KJ Costello at quarterback and he should fit in well in Leach’s air-raid offense. The Bulldogs have one of the best running backs in the league in Kylin Hill, but one has to wonder how many carries he may get as Leach is not known for running the ball.

The Bulldogs will be a tough out for teams this year, but LSU finds a way to win at home.

Final Score: LSU 38, Mississippi State 21 (1-0)

Vanderbillt Commodores. 2. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Oct. 3. Nashville (Tenn.). 887

One of LSU’s added on games as part of the revised conference-only schedule will be against what should be the league’s worst team in Vanderbilt. Head coach Derek Mason has been unable to put together any type of consistency while at Vanderbilt and this season does not figure to be much easier.

The Commodores will be hoping that new offensive coordinator Todd Fitch came come and ignite what was one of the worst offenses in the country last fall. He comes from Louisiana Tech, where he directed a pretty solid offense, but he had better quarterback play than Vanderbilt is likely to receive this fall.

LSU won last year’s meeting 66-38 and it had to be a minor miracle that Vanderbilt scored 38. Expect a blowout win for LSU against the Commodores.

Final Score: LSU 55, Vanderbilt 14 (2-0)
