Tennessee football enters the season as one of the unknown commodities of the 2020 season. What will be the things that hold them back?

Tennessee lived through two of the most embarrassing losses in all of college football last season, with a double-digit defeat against Georgia State followed by an overtime loss to BYU.

However, after a tough stretch of games that saw opponents like Florida, Georgia and Alabama, the Volunteers rebounded and played very strong for the remainder of the season, finishing with a come-from-behind victory over Indiana in the Taxslayer Bowl.

That being said, there is a lot of optimism in Knoxville, assuming that the Vols will play in 2020. The hopeful ending to the season has boosted Tennessee recruiting, who is seeing one of their best classes in recent memory.

Even with the late-season success last season, this team and head coach Jeremy Pruitt have a lot to prove. They haven’t shown that they can separate from schools like Missouri, South Carolina and Kentucky and be in the stratosphere with Georgia and Florida as the powerhouses of the East.

Right now, Tennessee looks more like the little brother trying to be cooler than all of his friends.

Let’s get into the three things that will potentially hold the Volunteers back in 2020.
