Oklahoma State football has a couple of legitimate Heisman Trophy candidates heading into the 2020 season. Who are they and can they win it?

What an offseason it’s been.

COVID-19 has hit the nation hard and following the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament in March, spring football was also cancelled. It’s been one of those never-ending offseasons.

For Oklahoma State, it has been especially eventful with the decisions by Tylan Wallace and Chuba Hubbard to return to Stillwater for another season in order to compete for a Big 12 title and a playoff berth. There was also an incident that occurred when Mike Gundy wore a shirt that Hubbard didn’t agree with and it almost led to him deciding to sit out the season.

The two have since reconciled and that’s good news because Hubbard is a serious Heisman contender for the Cowboys and he could become the first winner of the trophy since Barry Sanders in 1988.

Hubbard may not put up the numbers that Sanders did in that campaign as he rushed for over 2,800 yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior. If he can repeat his 2,000-yard, 20-touchdown performance from 2019, we could see Hubbard in New York this December.

Obviously he’s one Heisman candidate, but who is the other for the Cowboys?

Tylan Wallace is going to fly under the radar this season as a receiver who could contend for the Heisman Trophy. A receiver hasn’t won the award since 1991 when Desmond Howard took the trophy home and a lot had to do with his prowess as a returner.

Wallace missed some time at the end of last season after he caught 53 passes for 903 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2018, Wallace had 86 receptions for 1,491 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has shown he can put up video game-like numbers and if he can get back to that 2018 form, he can finish as a Heisman finalist.

Don’t be surprised if we see two Oklahoma State players in New York and potentially a third (Spencer Sanders) will receive some Heisman love.
