The matchup between Austin Peay and Central Arkansas football to open the season is exactly what we all needed to start 2020 off right.
In what was a low-scoring affair until the final handful of minutes, Central Arkansas took the lead late and held on to win, 24-17.
It was Austin Peay at the start, scoring on the first play of the game — shown below — with CJ Evans taking it 75 yards to the house. It was exactly how we all needed to start the 2020 football season, with an exciting play that had us all on our feet and excited to see what would happen next.
However, Central Arkansas got back into it, and when Austin Peay to the lead with about three minutes on the clock, Bear quarterback Breylin Smith took care of business and led his team down the field to go up seven and ultimately win the game. Smith wasn’t great by any means, throwing two interceptions and struggling with consistency throughout the game.
That being said though, he did enough to put his team up with about half a minute and his defense did enough to keep Austin Peay out of the end zone, intercepting Jeremiah Oatsvall in the final seconds.
This game was exactly what we all needed to kick off the 2020 season.
We have college football back and this one showed that these guys were ready to make plays when their name and number were called, whether they were ready fully conditioning-wise or not. That will for sure be a worry without spring practice and with very little fall camp for some programs, but right now, we all feel on top of the world because football is back and these players are ready to go.
