5. Memphis and SMU got off to slow starts

Both offense eventually got into gear, especially late in the game, but both of these teams are expected to be among the best in the country on the offensive side of the ball and both teams were filled with miscues on Saturday.

Some of this might be the crazy high expectations that I had for both teams entering the season on offense, but I was disappointed a bit in the inconsistency by both teams, who were both favored by at least 20 points.

Memphis was without star running back Kenneth Gainwell, who opted out of the season and quarterback Brady White had to do the heavy lifting and he did, throwing for 275 yards and four touchdowns. Memphis was trailing in the first quarter and led 21-14 at the half. I expect the Tigers to find their footing and be better the rest of the way.

SMU had bit more of a struggle against an inferior Texas State squad and I think some of that could be due to Rhett Lashlee no longer being the offensive coordinator. Quarterback Shane Buechele threw for 367 yards, but also had two interceptions.

Turning the ball over three times and scoring only 31 points on one of the nation’s worst defenses won’t be a recipe for success for the Mustangs going forward and how they improve will be something to watch as the season progresses.
