4. Marshall may have found a star at the quarterback position

It’s best not to overreact to any single performance, but redshirt freshman quarterback Grant Wells looked really sharp for the Thundering Herd in his week one performance against Eastern Kentucky, throwing for 307 yards and four touchdowns in his first career start for Marshall.

This game was never close and Wells looked like he fit right in.

Eastern Kentucky was overmatched and does not have the talent that a veteran team like Marshall possesses, but it was still impressive to see Wells handling the offense well and distributing the ball like he was. If Wells can be consistent like he was Saturday, Marshall will solidify its status as a contender in the C-USA.

Wells was not the only star on the field for Marshall on Saturday, as the Thundering Herd racked up over 282 yards rushing to along with Wells’s big day through the air. The defense was just good in every phase, holding Eastern Kentucky to just 166 yards of total offense. The only reason I have Marshall’s performance at No. 4 and not a few spots higher on this list is the quality of opponent that they played.

Marshall will have plenty of chances to prove that Saturday was no fluke.
