Oklahoma football has won five straight Big 12 titles, but is this the year someone knocks the Sooners off the top of the mountain?

Since 2000, the Oklahoma Sooners have been one of the most dominant teams in all of college football. They have 17 seasons of 10 or more wins, 13 conference titles, including the last five, and have one national championship. However, that championship was at the beginning of the 21st century but the Sooners have had their chances, making the College Football Playoff four out of the six years it has existed.

But the Sooners have not gotten past the semifinal round of the playoff, posting a 0-4 record.

So what is keeping the Sooners from getting over the hump? It’s not coaching, it’s sure as heck not quarterback play, and it has nothing to do with the rest of the offense. You could put some blame on the defense but the playoff has been pretty high scoring all-around. The answer is pretty simple: the Sooners honestly just lost to better teams.

So what makes this year different? Well, the new QB1 for the Sooners, Spencer Rattler, is probably the most talented quarterback to play for the QBU, and that is saying a lot given the last three years of names that have been the Sooners’ starting quarterback.

The only negative for Oklahoma this season is that the Big 12 will be more competitive than it has been in recent years. From Baylor to Texas and to in-state rival Oklahoma State, the Sooners will have their hands full all season.

So what does 2020 have in store for the Oklahoma Sooners and can they get over the hump and get into the national championship game?

Let’s find out.
