North Carolina football: 3 overreactions from runaway win over Syracuse
By Nick Fiore
1. Tar Heels defense is a top 10 unit
Looking at the box score you’d think the Carolina defense dominated, which it did. Giving up six points and only 202 total yards is almost as dominant as you can be. But they were going up against a vastly inferior offense with a lot of offensive line issues, evident by the seven sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss the Heels got.
Tommy DeVito looked lost at times and could end up losing his starting job. The Syracuse receivers didn’t help him though, with multiple drops including one in the back of the endzone.
Carolina corners got beat multiple times and were helped by drops and bad passes from DeVito. If a few of those turned into catches we’re talking a lot differently about this unit.
The Syracuse offense had a lot of question marks coming into Saturday and it clearly showed. Carolina’s defense is going to be very good, but there’s still some work to be done. Don’t let this performance trick you into thinking they’re ready to go up against the top of the ACC just yet.
