By Ryan Kay
The Group of Five is filled with serious contenders this season and here are the ones you need to watch around college football in Week 3.
Heading into of Week 3 of the college football season, there are some Group of Five teams that are undefeated and looking to make a name for themselves in a season where four conferences are currently not planning on playing in 2020.
Four teams from the AAC have started the 2020 season 1-0. Three teams from Conference USA are currently 1-0 and two FBS Independents have secured victories and are undefeated as well. The Group of Five conferences that made the biggest noise last weekend in Week 2 of play the Sun Belt has four teams at 1-0.
Which teams from the Group of Five will remain undefeated after their games in Week 3? Let’s take a look at this upcoming weekend’s matchups.
Coastal Carolina
Conference: Sun Belt
Why they are undefeated: In Week 2, they went on the road and faced off with Big 12 opponent Kansas who they defeated last season. The Chanticleers went into Kansas leading the Jayhawks 28-3 at the half. Coastal Carolina ended up winning the game by a final score of 38-23 and more and more people are starting to recognize that the Chanticleers may be competing for a Sun Belt title.
Who they play in Week 3: Coastal Carolina faces off against Campbell from the Big South in the FCS. The Fighting Camels lost at Georgia Southern after being in the lead at halftime and failing to convert on a two-point conversion to win the game and losing by one as the final score was 27-26.
When, where, and at what time is their game: It will be the only game involving an FBS team on Friday night as the Houston versus Memphis game is postponed. The game can be streamed live on ESPN 3 and it starts at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be played at Brooks Stadium, in Conway, S.C., the home of Coastal Carolina.
Will Coastal Carolina remain undefeated? It will not be easy as Campbell on the road had a legitimate chance to defeat Sun Belt opponent Georgia Southern and showed that they can play with FBS opponents. The Chanticleers need to take the Fighting Camels seriously and not overlook them after a big road win against a Power Five school. However, Coastal Carolina should win to remain undefeated with a win over Campbell.
Prediction: Coastal Carolina 35, Campbell 23
