4. Potential Heisman Trophy front-runners will rise from SEC

With the start of the SEC comes the heavy expectations from the top half of the conference to compete for the College Football Playoff. As teams will make a push for the conference title and playoff appearances, key playmakers will step up and lead them.

In the first week of SEC play, there will be some potential Heisman Trophy candidates that will see their chance to rise in the rankings.

Crimson Tide running back Najee Harris is a big candidate during the preseason to come from the SEC. He is one of the most experienced and explosive playmakers for the Crimson Tide’s offense. Last season, Harris rushed for 1,224 yards and 13 touchdowns on 209 carries. He also caught 27 passes for 304 yards and seven touchdowns.

Harris’ dynamic playmaking ability as a runner and in the passing game made one of the most reliable players for the Tide last season. He will certainly be called again for this season under a new starting quarterback. Alabama will travel to face the Missouri Tigers, who were much efficient in stopping the passing game than the rushing game. Harris could start his Heisman campaign with a dominant game against the Tigers.

Quarterback Kyle Trask was the savior of the Florida Gators this past season after the big injury to Feleipe Franks early in 2019. In 12 games and 10 starts this past season, Trask threw for 2,941 yards, 25 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for four touchdowns.

Trask has been one of the most productive and efficient passing quarterbacks for the Gators in many seasons. He and tight end Kyle Pitts are one of the most reliable and efficient quarterback-tight end duos in the SEC. The Rebels were ranked 120th in the nation (last in the SEC) in passing yards allowed per game (278.3) last season. This game will be the start of a potential Heisman Trophy campaign as the Gators will rely on him to carry the Gators to their first SEC East title since 2016 and their first SEC title since 2008.
