1. South Alabama’s Carlos Davis will be the game’s MVP

There’s one clear winner in the South Alabama offense when Chance Lovertich takes the field at quarterback for the Jaguars: running back Carlos Davis. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound sophomore is absolutely explosive out of the backfield, and he plays very well when Lovertich is on the field. Here’s a brief summary of why.

When Desmond Trotter is at quarterback for South Alabama, defenses are forced to respect his run threat. That means that they load the box and stack against the run — and take their chances one-on-one with the receivers on the perimeter.

When Lovertich takes the field, he is a much better passer, and not nearly the run threat that Trotter is. Opposing defenses back off of the line of scrimmage to try and contain the receivers, Kawaan Short and Jalen Tolbert, who are two of the best receivers in the Group of Five. This gives Davis more opportunities to make plays because of the lack of defenders remaining in the box.

Davis is also a good receiver. He’s gained 213 total yards from scrimmage so far this season, and scored a touchdown. He’s fast, he’s explosive, and he’s going to be on the NFL’s radar because of his ideal size for the position and electric explosiveness.
