Mississippi State football knocked off the defending champion in LSU to open the season, winning by a 10-point margin. What did we learn?

The Bulldogs of Mississippi State came in as a big underdog against LSU and proved everyone wrong quickly, knocking off the defending national champions 44-34.

What did we learn about each of these teams?

3. KJ Costello proved he is SEC-ready

It took over 600 yards passing, but Stanford transfer KJ Costello showed that he is SEC ready after doing enough to knock off LSU by 10 points. He finished with 623 yards and five touchdowns. He may have thrown two interceptions, but overall he did enough to be the winning quarterback in this one.

He was able to elude pressure a lot of the time, finishing 36-of-60, and making the young LSU defense look just that — young. He proved the doubters wrong and was quick to show that he has the ability, with the help of head coach Mike Leach, to fight with anyone in the SEC.
