3. Texas Tech was unable to shut down Sam Ehlinger
Sam Ehlinger threw for just under 2,000 yards as a freshmen with an 11-to-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio. In his sophomore and junior seasons, he threw for 3,200 plus yards in each season and threw for at least 25 touchdowns each year. His junior year was his best season as the quarterback of the Longhorns as he threw for 32 touchdowns and 3,663 yards leading Texas to an 8-4 season that ended in a 38-10 victory in the Alamo Bowl over No. 11 ranked Utah.
Ehlinger has been very efficient and productive through his first two games and played very well against Texas Tech.
He started the game with a 2-yard touchdown run. In the first half against Tech, Ehlinger was 14-of-18 for 130 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
In the second half, after no touchdowns produced by Ehlinger in the third quarter that also included an unfortunate interception, the Heisman contender played well against the Texas Tech defense in the fourth quarter.
Ehlinger threw for two touchdown in the fourth quarter and threw and completed a two point conversation to force overtime.
